Lakshadweep, formerly (1956–73) Laccadive, Minicoy, and Amindivi Islands, union territory of India. It is a group of some three dozen islands scattered over some 78,000 square kms of the Arabian Sea off the southwestern coast of India. The principal islands in the territory are Minicoy and those in the Amindivi group. The easternmost island lies about 300 kms from the coast of the state of Kerala. Ten of the islands are inhabited. The administrative centre is Kavaratti. The name Lakshadweep means “Hundred Thousand Islands” in the Malayalam language and also in Sanskrit. Area 32 square kms.

Visiting Lakshadweep is an experience unlike any other you have had till now. One has to keep a lot on his mind before traveling to these 36 coral islands hanging midway in sea between Indian mainland and unending stretches of shimmering blue water visible till the horizons.

The basic needs of a human being are drinking water or resources of food, which are limited here. As a result the entry for the outsiders to these islands is strictly restricted.

It doesn’t matter whether you are an Indian national or a foreigner, you need permit to travel to Lakshadweep as tourists. All you need to provide for the permit is proper information like name, address, date and place of birth. In case of foreign nationals, passport and visa details are also required to be given to the resort staying in. Indians are permitted to travel to Agatti, Bangaram, Kadmat, Kavaratti, Kalpeni and Minicoy. However, foreigners are only allowed to visit Agatti, Bangaram, and Kadmat.

As per the Rules no person who is not a native of the island shall enter or reside in or attempt to enter or reside in the island except under and in accordance with a permit issued by a competent authority.

These rules may be called the Laccadive Minicoy Islands (Restrictions on Entry and Residence)

Rule, 1967 They extend to the whole of the Union Territory of the Laccadive, Minicoy and Amindivi Islands. Organized tourism is of recent origin to Lakshadweep.

These islands are basically restricted areas but those who avail the package tours being conducted by SPORTS (Society for Promotion of Nature Tourism & Sports in Lakshadweep) or Authorized Private Resort Groups are exempted from entry restriction.

At present 3 inhabited islands – Kavaratti, Kalpeni and Minicoy have been opened for domestic tourists only and Kadmat, Agatti and Bangaram, are open for both domestic and international tourists.
